Dive Description

Dolphin House — Sha’ab Samadai — is a horseshoe-shaped reef that encloses a shallow, sheltered lagoon. The central lagoon contains very shallow water and is the characteristic area for dolphin encounters and snorkelling. Around the lagoon, reef slopes, coral blocks, pinnacles, caves and deeper outer reef areas create different diving profiles. Depths vary significantly by area, approximately from 5 m in the lagoon to around 25 m on the outer reef. The site can offer very different experiences depending on whether the focus is the lagoon, reef formations, caves, outer reef or marine life. There is no single fixed route — the profile depends on conditions, the guide’s judgement and the selected area.

Location & How to Get There

Site-Specific Features

Site-Specific Features

The Dolphin Lagoon

The shallow central lagoon is the defining feature of Sha’ab Samadai and the characteristic area for dolphin encounters. Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) use the lagoon as a resting area during the day. Access is regulated, with designated zones intended to minimise disturbance to the dolphins. Scuba diving takes place in designated areas outside the dolphin resting zone, while snorkelling access is regulated according to the site rules. Encounters are a wildlife experience and are never guaranteed.

Learn more about dolphins

Wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed. These are wild animals in their natural habitat.

Reef & Coral Gardens

The horseshoe reef and surrounding formations offer coral-rich shallow and intermediate-depth diving. Coral gardens along the reef slopes and pinnacles provide vibrant, healthy underwater scenery with a rich variety of reef fish.

Caves & Pinnacles

The designated diving areas include coral pinnacles, blocks and cave-like formations that create varied underwater terrain and shelter reef life. Some areas contain swim-throughs and overhead sections. Entering an overhead environment is not part of a standard beginner dive and requires an appropriate route, conditions, training and equipment. Divers can enjoy the surrounding reef formations without entering enclosed passages.

Outer Reef

The outer sections of the reef descend into deeper water and offer different profiles for experienced divers. The outer reef has more exposure, potential current, and a different character from the sheltered lagoon, with larger-scale reef scenery and broader marine-life encounters.

Current Considerations

Current can be present on the reef slopes. The guide selects the route according to conditions.

Marine Life Focus

Reef fish, turtles, moray eels, octopus, lionfish, macro life.

Experience Implications

Suitable for Open Water divers and above on an appropriate route when conditions allow. Good buoyancy and reef awareness are important.

Outer Reef & Deeper Areas

Depth Range

Approximately 18–25 m for the profile described here; some outer reef sections extend beyond 30 m.

Reef Zone

Outer reef slopes and deeper coral formations

What to Expect

The outer reef slopes and deeper coral formations offer a more exposed environment and broader reef scenery. Current may be more likely than inside the sheltered lagoon.

Current Considerations

The guide assesses conditions and selects the appropriate area and profile on the day.

Marine Life Focus

Larger reef fish, rays and occasional pelagic visitors.

Experience Implications

Suitable for experienced divers comfortable with depth and potential current. Advanced Open Water or equivalent experience is appropriate.

Conditions & Currents

Currents at Dolphin House are variable. The lagoon is sheltered and usually calm, making it ideal for snorkellers and beginners. On the reef slopes and outer reef, current can be present and its direction can vary. The map may show a general current direction, but actual conditions can change and should be assessed by the guide on the day. The dive profile is selected based on conditions, not on a fixed route. Divers should be prepared for variable conditions and follow the guide’s assessment.

Who Is This Site For?

Dolphin House is suitable for a broad range of experience levels because different areas provide different depths and profiles. Beginners and Open Water divers can explore suitable shallow reef routes within the designated diving areas, while snorkellers may enter the permitted dolphin-watching zone under the site’s regulations. The protected dolphin resting zone remains off-limits. Experienced divers can explore deeper outer-reef areas when conditions and certification or experience are appropriate. Families and mixed groups can share the same trip, with some members snorkelling while others dive. Underwater photographers will find subjects ranging from dolphins and turtles to reef fish and macro life. Not every profile is appropriate for every certification level — the guide determines the plan based on conditions and the group.

Wildlife Etiquette

DO: Maintain neutral buoyancy. Keep a respectful distance from all wildlife. Let animals choose their direction. Remain calm and quiet. Leave a clear escape route. Allow dolphins to decide whether to approach.

DO NOT: Chase dolphins. Touch animals. Surround them. Block their route. Feed them. Make repeated attempts to approach them. Damage coral or stand on reef structures.

These guidelines are essential at Dolphin House. The dolphins are wild animals, and respectful observation is the only way to keep them here.

The dolphin resting area is protected and off-limits to scuba divers. Diving takes place in designated areas outside the resting zone, while snorkelling access is regulated.

When to Dive

Dolphin House can be dived throughout the year. Conditions and marine-life activity vary with season and day. Dolphin encounters remain unpredictable and should never be tied to a guaranteed month. Shallow diving, snorkelling, reef life and photography are available as year-round experiences subject to conditions. Water temperatures range from approximately 22°C in winter to 30°C in summer, with visibility typically around 20–40 m depending on conditions.

Underwater Photography

Dolphin House offers excellent opportunities for both wide-angle and macro photography.

For wide-angle photography, the coral gardens, reef formations and turtles are key subjects during dives. Dolphin photography, when encounters occur, must follow the site’s regulated snorkelling arrangements and designated access zones. Let dolphins determine the distance; never chase, block or surround them for a photograph.

For macro, the shallower reef areas, caves and coral structures support reef fish, octopus, lionfish, pipefish and small reef life. Patient, slow observation produces better results than active pursuit.

Responsible photography is essential. Maintain neutral buoyancy at all times. Do not touch, chase or block any marine life. Do not damage coral or stand on reef structures. Allow wildlife to determine the distance. The goal is to photograph behaviour as it unfolds naturally.

Safety & Practical Information

Dolphin House is a boat-based dive site accessed from the Marsa Alam area. Listen carefully to the guide’s briefing before entering the water. Conditions can vary between the lagoon and the outer reef. Stay within the planned profile and maintain appropriate buoyancy. Respect all wildlife — the dolphins are wild animals and must not be chased, touched or surrounded. Surface signalling equipment (SMB) should be carried where appropriate to the dive plan. Follow the guide’s instructions at all times. The site is regulated to protect the dolphins, and designated zones must be respected.
